In elementary school, I was told that Asia is the biggest continent, China on its eastern edge is the most populous country in the world, and India on its southern edge is the second most populous country. Nothing else was important enough to pass on to students. So when I first started collecting Oriental textiles, it came as a pleasant surprise to find that all parts of Asia have been alive with interesting events for millennia.
Writing this book has been like reading a gripping novel. There is a plot, a story line, a cast of characters, character development, suspense, intrigue, greed, successes, failures, politics, wars, espionage, science, coded messages, tribal loyalties, families, love, and marriage. Every suzani has an interesting story to tell.
Many collectors approach textiles from an aesthetic viewpoint. Certainly, I first started collecting Oriental rugs, then later suzanis, because they are beautiful, but I quickly realized that, for me, collecting had a strong intellectual aspect. I have always been fascinated by the history and culture that they represent. "Collecting is not simply an accumulation of objects but also an exploration of how things have evolved in a historical context" writes George Hewitt Meyers.
Trying to understand the history and everything else about these embroideries has stimulated me. Each one has a fascinating story to tell about itself and the people who made it. As we admire their artistry, we are reminded how they were produced in sometimes dangerous conditions, while the artisans sought to brighten their lives and preserve their traditions.
